Samosir<\/strong> \u2013 A musical orchestra group called Vinculos<\/strong>, consisting of around 50 members from Madrid, Spain<\/strong>, will visit Lake Toba<\/strong> from July 27 to August 2, 2017<\/strong>.<\/p>

This marks the first leg of Vinculos\u2019 tour in Indonesia, before continuing on to the capital city Jakarta<\/strong> and the Thousand Islands<\/strong> (Kepulauan Seribu<\/em>). It will also be their first visit to Asia<\/strong>, carrying a mission of cultural, social, and educational exchange<\/strong>.<\/p>

Vinculos<\/strong> is an initiative by the Siero Chamber Orchestra (OCAS)<\/strong> of Spain that promotes social and cultural integration through music<\/strong>. The group has performed in 12 countries<\/strong>, delivering over 300 concerts<\/strong>, distributing more than 150 musical instruments<\/strong>, and organizing approximately 100 workshops and master classes<\/strong>.<\/p>

Supported by the Directorate General of Culture of the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia<\/strong>, the activities will take place across three regencies<\/strong>:<\/p>

  • Balige<\/strong> and Laguboti<\/strong> in Toba Samosir (Tobasa)<\/strong>,<\/p><\/li>

  • Bakkara Village<\/strong> in Humbang Hasundutan (Humbahas)<\/strong>,<\/p><\/li>

  • and Sianjur Mula-Mula<\/strong>, Lumban Suhi-Suhi<\/strong>, and Sigulati<\/strong> in Samosir<\/strong> Regency.<\/p><\/li><\/ul>

    The locations were carefully selected by the Directorate General of Culture to highlight the Toba Caldera Geopark<\/strong> under the theme “Super Volcano<\/strong>“, which has become an iconic identity of the Lake Toba area. The aim is to add cultural and educational value to the musical journey of Vinculos in the Batak homeland.<\/p>

    In addition to showcasing orchestral works, Vinculos will also collaborate with the Batak Toba traditional ensemble Mataniari<\/strong>, founded by Rithaony Hutajulu<\/strong> and Irwansyah Harahap<\/strong>, both faculty members in the Department of Ethnomusicology, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, University of North Sumatra (USU)<\/strong>.<\/p>

    This collaboration will feature arranged compositions<\/strong> of Batak gondang music<\/strong> and Batak opera songs<\/strong>, blended into orchestral formats. Mataniari<\/strong>, composed of seasoned Batak Toba musicians, includes notable names such as \u201cThe King of Sulim\u201d Marsius Sitohang<\/strong>, a Batak music maestro and recipient of the 2013 Cultural Award from the Ministry of Education and Culture.<\/p>

    Other art groups participating include the Dolok Sipiak dance troupe<\/strong>, the Gitanos music group from Parapat<\/strong>, and a visual installation art collective from Unimed (Medan State University)<\/strong>. Their collaboration will be presented in an open-air performance at Sigulati, Samosir<\/strong>.<\/p>

    Vinculos also has a social program agenda<\/strong>, including a visit to Ephata School<\/strong> in Laguboti<\/strong>, which serves children with special needs<\/strong>. Additionally, music workshops<\/strong> for elementary and middle school students<\/strong> will be held in Bakkara Village, Humbahas<\/strong> and at a learning center in Sianjur Mula-Mula, Samosir<\/strong>.<\/p>

    A visit to Lumban Suhi-Suhi Village<\/strong> in Samosir is also planned, where the Vinculos team will engage directly with traditional Batak ulos<\/em> weavers<\/strong> and the surrounding community.<\/p>

    Dr. Hilmar Farid<\/strong>, Director General of Culture, stated that this event is not only a means of cultural diplomacy and exchange<\/strong> between Indonesia and Spain, but also a platform to promote tourism potential<\/strong>, particularly in Lake Toba<\/strong>, which has been designated by President Joko Widodo<\/strong> as one of the ten priority destinations<\/strong> for national tourism development.<\/p>

    \u201cThe involvement of local and provincial governments in supporting this initiative reflects a strong, positive effort \u2014 from planning to execution,\u201d he said in an official statement.<\/p>

    \u201c\u2018Unidad en la diversidad\u2019 (Unity in Diversity<\/em>) is the theme of Vinculos\u2019 cultural and musical tour in Indonesia this year. We hope this activity will bring fresh energy and act as a catalyst for the advancement of tourism in the Lake Toba region in the future,\u201d he added.<\/p><\/blockquote>
